Aurel Istrate

Few wines come with a story as bold and captivating as Chateau Musar. Tucked away in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, this legendary estate was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, who returned from Bordeaux inspired to bring French winemaking to the Eastern Mediterranean. But what followed wasn’t just about vines and vintages; it was about resilience, passion, and creating beauty even in the darkest times.

Fast-forward to the 1970's, Lebanon was in the midst of civil war, and yet Chateau Musar never stopped producing wine. That’s thanks to Gaston’s son, Serge Hochar, who perfected the winery’s now-famous red blend in 1977. For 15 years, Musar was the only winery in Lebanon to keep its barrels rolling. His dedication earned him Decanter Magazine’s very first “Man of the Year” award.

2000 Chateau Musar Red – A Vintage With Soul

This bottle is more than just a wine—it’s a chapter in history. The 2000 vintage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, and it pours darker than most Musar reds, almost ink-like, with the kind of depth that draws you in.

On the nose, smoky tobacco leaves, earthy black tea, savory black olives. A rustic edge that whispers: this wine has seen things.

With a sip, and it unravels beautifully and refreshing menthol and spice, hints of truffle, pomegranate, figs, and a balance that somehow ties it all together without losing its wild side

This is not your average red. It’s raw, soulful, and full of character. It tells a story in every swirl, every sip. And if you are a wine lover looking for something off the beaten path with a deep historical backbone and unmistakable personality, Chateau Musar is a must-try.

The 2000 vintage? Easily one of my all-time favorites.

''At the end of the day, you really can’t make a wrong choice.
As long as you pay attention to what it is that you don’t like about a wine
each bottle will get you closer to what you do like.
Take it one glass at a time!''
